NGO – MFI Partnership for Water and Sanitation Promotion

A new concept was developed for improving the water and sanitation situation in the rural areas of Tiruchirappalli District covering Mannachanallur and Uppiliyapuram Blocks with, USA funding. It was proposed to provide accessible water and sanitation facilities to 11,200 households with the loan support from Guardian MFI as a part of WaterCredit Initiatives in three years phasing period starting from 2012. The project will ensure capacity building support for the community based organizations and elected representatives through training and exposure visits. In addition to the community mobilization programs, the project will ensure training for the masons on cost-effective toilet models for the rural households, hygiene education in the schools ensuring child-to-child approach.

Gramalaya through its trained Community Health Workers (CHW) will impart hygiene education for sustained behavioural changes and hygiene practices in the operational areas selected under the project. The training support provided to the school teachers and PRIs will enable more people’s participation in the water and sanitation program which would improve the environmental status by reducing open defecation practices in the villages through household toilet coverage, safe drinking water supply by installation of individual water taps. There are 57 panchayats covering 228 villages in the two blocks. Gramalaya will facilitate access to microcredit through its subisidiary organization GUARDIAN MFI to enable poor families to install water points and toilet facilities at the household-level. This flip chart is utilized by the CHWs for imparting hygiene education in a systematic manner through door-to-door visits and interpersonal communications in the project villages.
